How to use it

A short version. Full guidance comes with every order.

  1. 1

    Hydrate the coir first

One 5 kg cocopeat block expands to 70–75 litres — enough for two to three 12 × 12 in bags. Expand it fully before you start filling, so you are not guessing at the moisture level.

  2. 2

    Fill, but do not compact

Fill to about 5 cm below the rim and firm the coir lightly. Pressing it down hard removes the air spaces that make cocopeat work. Leave the headspace so water does not run straight over the edge.

  3. 3

    Place it for drainage

Stand the bag on a slab, brick or pot feet so water can leave the base. A bag sitting flat on a wet floor stays saturated, and roots suffer even when the mix is right.

  4. 4

    Plant, water, feed

Plant into the bag and water until it runs from the base. Cocopeat supplies almost no nutrition, so feed on a schedule from the first week rather than waiting for pale leaves.

  5. 5

    Empty and store dry

At the end of the season, empty the coir, wash the bag and let it dry fully before folding it away. Stored dry, an HDPE bag will give you years of use.

FAQ

Do the bags come filled with cocopeat?

No. The bags ship empty. Pair them with our 5 kg cocopeat blocks — one block fills roughly two to three 12 × 12 in bags, depending on how firmly you fill them.

How long do HDPE grow bags last?

Our 240 GSM UV-stabilised bags should last five to seven seasons with care. Emptying and drying them between crops, and keeping them off standing water, is what gets you the full life.

What size should I buy for tomatoes?

12 × 12 in suits chillies, brinjal, greens and compact tomato varieties. For full-size tomato or cucumber plants, choose 15 × 15 in or a 24 × 12 × 12 in rectangular bag.

Do the bags have drainage holes?

Yes — pre-punched at the base and lower sides. Check they are clear before filling, especially on a bag that has been folded in storage.
